Milos quickly became one of my favorite stops during our honeymoon in Greece. After leaving Athens, we spent five nights on the island, giving us plenty of time to relax, explore, and enjoy some great meals.

Before we got there, I wasn’t sure what gluten-free options I’d find. Milos is much smaller than Athens and doesn’t have any fully gluten-free restaurants, so I expected to eat mostly grilled meat, seafood, and Greek salad. My husband doesn’t eat fish, and while I do eat some seafood, it’s not usually my top pick. Still, Milos is a great place for fresh seafood.

But I was pleasantly surprised. The staff at every restaurant we visited was friendly and helpful, and many understood gluten-free requests. I got to enjoy traditional Greek dishes during our stay. Overall, eating gluten-free in Milos was easier than I expected.

Just a quick note: I eat gluten-free, but I don’t have celiac disease. I always ask about ingredients and how food is prepared, but I don’t need a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. Since Milos doesn’t have any fully gluten-free restaurants, this guide is based on my own experience and what each restaurant shared with me. If you have celiac disease or are very sensitive to cross-contact, be sure to ask questions and pick the places that feel right for you.

In this guide, I’ll share the restaurants we visited, what I ordered, and a few places that were recommended to us but we didn’t have time to try. If you’re planning a trip to the islands, check out my Gluten-Free Athens Guide for restaurant tips before your ferry to Milos, and my Milos Travel Guide for everything we did during our five days there, including beaches, a catamaran tour, and our favorite viewpoints.

Understanding the Gluten-Free Classifications

Everyone has their own comfort level with gluten-free dining, so I’ve used a simple system in this guide based on my experience. These labels should help make the main differences clear.

Dedicated Gluten-Free | The entire restaurant or bakery is gluten-free.

Gluten-Free Friendly | There are several clearly marked gluten-free options, or the staff knows about gluten-free dining. Gluten is still used in the kitchen, so ask questions if you’re worried about cross-contamination.

Gluten-Free Options | There are a few gluten-free dishes, but gluten-free dining isn’t the main focus. I ate comfortably at these places, but if you have specific dietary needs, it’s smart to ask about ingredients and how the food is prepared.

Limited Gluten-Free Options | There are only one or two gluten-free choices, so I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit just for the gluten-free menu.

Restaurants We Ate At In Milos

  • Psaravolada Restaurant
  • Rifaki
  • O! Hamos! Tavern
  • Gyros of Milos
  • Petrinos

Psaravolada Restaurant

Gluten-Free Friendly

We chose Psaravolada Restaurant for our first wedding anniversary, and it was a memorable place to celebrate. It’s on the southern coast of Milos, near Agia Kiriaki Beach, with a beautiful view of the sea. The scenery alone makes it worth booking a table. Another couple was celebrating their anniversary that night too, which made the evening feel even more special.

We started with beef carpaccio, crispy feta wrapped in rice paper, and a selection of Greek dips. My husband had regular pita, and I got gluten-free bread. The crispy feta was one of my favorite dishes of the trip. If you love cheese, you should try it. I also ordered the chicken, which was very tender and came with a tasty mayo that brought everything together.

The staff really understood gluten-free dining. They brought gluten-free bread, were careful to avoid cross-contamination, and clearly pointed out what was naturally gluten-free or could be adapted on the menu. It made the whole meal feel relaxed and easy.

For dessert, I had the crème brûlée, and my husband picked the orange cake. He still talks about that cake and says it was his favorite dessert in all of Greece. If you don’t need to eat gluten-free, he definitely recommends trying it.

Rifaki

Gluten-Free Options

Rifaki was a great surprise on our trip. We stopped in for lunch while exploring Pollonia because it looked inviting, and we liked it so much that we went back for dinner on our last night in Milos. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff was genuinely friendly, and they were happy to explain which dishes were gluten-free.

The Feast of Colors salad was the highlight for me. It had mixed greens, quinoa, colorful peppers, cherry tomatoes, Milos cheese, and a fresh orange dressing. It was my favorite salad in all of Greece. The local cheese was delicious, and the dressing tied everything together. I still think about that salad and would love to make it at home.

During our two visits, we also tried the chicken souvlaki, sausage with leeks, and pork steak. Everything was cooked well, full of flavor, and good enough that we wanted to come back for another meal.

O! Hamos! Tavern

Gluten-Free Options

O! Hamos! Tavern was a place I knew we had to try. It kept coming up in my research about Milos, and after visiting, I understand why.

The setting is part of what makes it special. The restaurant is right in front of a beautiful beach, so we arrived early, rented lounge chairs, and spent the afternoon by the water. O! Hamos! doesn’t take reservations, so this plan worked well. As the sun set, we joined the waitlist. If you visit during the busy season, I suggest arriving before dinner to enjoy the beach and watch the sunset while you wait. If you get there after 7 p.m., you can order a drink and use the lounge chairs while you wait for your table.

For dinner, we shared grilled vegetables, creamy fava, and pork ribs. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, with simple flavors that let the local ingredients shine. The waitress was helpful in showing us which items were gluten-free, which made ordering easy.

Dessert was the real surprise. We tried the yogurt mousse with “Koufeto,” a traditional Milos spoon sweet made with white pumpkin, honey, cinnamon, and almonds, served over yogurt. I’d never had anything like it before. The jam was sweet but not too much, and the white pumpkin made it a dessert I’ll always remember from our trip.

Petrinos

Gluten-Free Options

After we arrived in Milos by ferry and checked into our hotel, Petrinos was our first stop for lunch. It’s right on the waterfront in Adamas and was the perfect place to settle into island life with a relaxed meal and a beautiful view of the harbor.

We shared the Cycladic Greek salad, and I ordered the chicken souvlaki. Like many places in Greece, much of the menu was naturally gluten-free, and our server clearly pointed out which dishes were safe to order. Everything was fresh, tasty, and just what we wanted after a morning of travel.

Gyros of Milos

Gluten-Free Options

After our catamaran tour, we stopped at Gyros of Milos for a quick and casual dinner. While the gyros with pita aren’t available gluten-free, there are still a few good options if you skip the pita.

I had the grilled chicken with fries, which was simple, tasty, and just what I wanted after a day on the water. My husband had the chicken gyros and said it was one of his favorites in Greece. If you want a quick, affordable meal, this is a great stop while exploring Milos.

Restaurants I Didn’t Have Time to Try

We spent five nights in Milos and visited a lot of restaurants, but there are still a few on my list for next time. I haven’t eaten at these places myself, so these recommendations are from other gluten-free travelers and information from the restaurants.

Archontoula | Is in Plaka and marks its gluten-free dishes on the menu, so it’s easier to see what you can order without asking about every item.

Barriello | This farm-to-table restaurant in Trypiti serves traditional Greek food with local ingredients. Gluten-free dishes are labeled on the menu, and both the food and atmosphere get great reviews.

Mikros Apoplous | Is in Adamas and often came up in my research on Milos. Reviews say the staff knows about gluten-free dining, and gluten-free items are clearly marked on the menu.

What Eating Gluten-Free in Milos Is Really Like

I left Milos pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to eat gluten-free. Even without any dedicated gluten-free restaurants, I always found staff who understood my questions, pointed out naturally gluten-free dishes, and made simple changes when needed.

Greek food is also great for gluten-free dining. With grilled meats, fresh salads, local cheeses, vegetables, dips, and plenty of naturally gluten-free dishes, I never felt like I was missing out. Some of my favorite meals from our whole honeymoon were in Milos, which says a lot about the island’s food scene.

If you have celiac disease or are very sensitive to cross-contact, you’ll need to ask more detailed questions and decide what feels right for you. But if you’re looking for gluten-free options in Milos, I hope this guide helps you enjoy the island’s amazing food as much as we did.
